Comfort care

Hospice vs. palliative care

These terms are often confused. This page explains the difference in plain language and what each can provide at home.

Quick checklist

  • Palliative care = comfort + symptom support at any stage of serious illness (can be alongside treatment).
  • Hospice = comfort-focused care when life expectancy is limited (eligibility rules apply).
  • Both support the patient and the caregiver.
  • Asking early usually improves support, not the opposite.

What each typically provides

  • Symptom management, support for stress and decisions.
  • Help coordinating care and equipment needs.
  • Education for caregivers.
