Safety for memory issues (locks, ID, routines)

Memory issues increase risk. This page covers simple, non-invasive steps that reduce wandering and improve safety at home.

Quick checklist

  • Start with exits: locks/alarms, door chimes, visual cues.
  • Create an ID plan: ID bracelet, wallet card, recent photo.
  • Keep routines consistent; reduce “surprise” changes.
  • If wandering is active, involve clinicians and consider local resources.

Home safety checklist

  • Door chimes/alarms; consider childproof covers if appropriate.
  • Remove trip hazards; night lights; bathroom safety supports.
  • Secure meds, chemicals, tools, car keys if risk is present.

ID and emergency plan

  • Recent photo stored on your phone.
  • Medical info card (name, conditions, meds, allergies).
  • Share a plan with neighbors/family if wandering risk is high.
